| Abstract | This study is concerned with the characteristics of vehicle operation on roads of low standard as compared with those built to modern concepts of geometric design. Friendship Highway and Sukumvit Highway were selected as suitable sites on which to carry out the field work. Friendship Highway was designed to high standards whilst Sukumvit Highway is an old road which was built to standards typical of most rural highways in Thailand. Lateral placement of moving vehicles was the main point of study. This parameter was expressed as the distance from the edge of pavement, or from the center line marking where present, to the nearer wheel. A photographic method was used to obtain the data, measurements were made both during the day and at night. The results of the measurements of the lateral placement and observations of vehicle speeds are presented in the form of frequency distributions. Appropriate indices of these distributions were computed to aid in the assimilation of the data and statistical comparisons were made wherever appropriate. The results show the effects of roadway and shoulder width on the behavior of traffic. It is expected that the results will aid in reaching decisions regarding the future design of roads and in the improvement of existing roads in Thailand in the context of providing economic designs and safer operating conditions. |
