| Abstract | This research was conducted to study the role of the Friendship Highway in the economic development of the region through which it is located. General concepts pertaining to economic benefits which may be induced by the construction of development highways are presented. Certain of these economic effects are selected for detailed analysis. The desires of traffic using the Bangkok-Nongkai road (Northeast Highway) are analysed and traffic generation along the Friendship Highway is studied. Direct benefits to users of the Friendship Highway are dealt with and an analysis of the competitive effects of this highway on rail transportation in the region is presented. The decline in railway freight and passenger traffic ie studied in detail. Agricultural economic development in Saraburi and Korat changwads is studied from the standpoint of the influence of the Friendship Highway. Agricultural production is classified into the following categories for study: upland crops, vegetables, rice, poultry, and swine. Time-series changes in agricultural production in the Friendship Highway area are investigated by comparing the data with two other areas having generally similar environmental conditions. The two datum regions, Korat-Nongkai and Surin-Roi-ed, have transportation facilities roughly comparable to those existing in the study region prior to the construction of the Friendship Highway. Conclusions pertaining to the economic effects of the Friendship Highway are drawn. |
