AbstractTh*3 objective of this thesis is to investigate the effects of the application of electro-motive force upon undisturbed samples of marine clay. The properties under study are consolidation and unconfined compressive strength. The consolidation tests show that electro-osmosis is effective in accerating consolidation of marine clay. Unconfined compressive strengths were determined for preconsolidated samples, which had been consolidated in a 10-cm plastic cubical box under a certain surcharge whilst electro-motive force was applied. The results show that the unconfined compressive strength of the clay is increased within 24 hours when an electrical gradient of 1 volt per cm is applied. The hypothesis of the floc ball structure of marine clay is given. The description of the balls, their water contents, and the principles controlling the breakdown of the floc ball are also discussed.
