AbstractVibration analysis of a vertical cantilevered cylindrical shell, using the technique of finite elements is presented. The excitation applied is the transverse motion of its base. Simple cylindrical ring elements of equal length are used with two nodes per element and eight degrees of free Formulation is based on the theory of Reissner-Naghdi and Berry. Numerical results for the fundamental frequencies of vibration are tabulated for a range of length/radius ratio and a particular radius/thickness ratio. Comparison of results is made with those obtained using Ritz method in conjunction with Flogged shell equations, and also with those obtained using classical beam theory. Applicability of Billington's simplified sixth order thin shell theory to the problem of vibration is also studied. Frequencies obtained for this simplified theory is compared with those obtained by Herrmann using three dimensional analysis of wave propagation and also with those obtained using classical eighth order shell theories.
