AbstractFinite element techniques are applied to in-plane, out-of-plane and buckling analyses of stiffened and unstiffened sector plates. An annular sector element with four nodes is considered in the analysis. The number of kinematic degrees-of-freedom per node is taken as two and four for in plane and out-of-plane analyses respectively. An attempt is made to develop a new in-plane sector element (PSR element). The PSR element has all its rigid body modes incorporated in its assumed displacement field. Numerical results of a few plane-stress problems are compared with the analytic solutions as well as those obtained by the most recently developed elements to prove the superiority of the proposed PSR element. A comparison of the results for the buckling analysis of stiffened and unstiffened sector plates is also made with the known analytical solutions. The proposed method is found to give very accurate results even with a coarse mesh due to the in corporation of the exact rigid body modes of a sector element.
