| Abstract | The stress concentration of large-sized deformed bars was studied employing the subparametric finite element technique. The study deals particularly with lugs occurring symmetrically in deformed bars subjected to uniform elongation. The basic element used in this three-dimensional analysis is a subparametric hexahedron element of arbitrary shape having 96 degrees of freedom for the displacement functions (cubically) and 60 degrees of freedom for the shape functions (parabolically). Results of the variation in stress concentration of the deformed bar were discussed in terms of its fatigue strength. It was found that a higher stress concentration which amount to 1.4 of the stress concentration factor occurred at the surface of the lug-base and at the junction between the lug and the rib of the deformed bar. Thus, it is believed that the fatigue failure of the deformed bars will probably be due to high stress concentration. It is considered that a comparative study of this kind on the various surface deformation will enable us to determine the best surface deformation of large-sized bars. |
