AbstractA theoretical and an experimental study on secondary compression related to Bangkok subsidence was performed. A finite difference consolidation model based on the Gibson & Lo theory, to predict subsidence was developed in the form of a "Basic Model". Consolidation tests of durations longer than three months were carried out on Bangkok clay to investigate the significance of secondary compression and to evaluate the model parameters. All past data were also analyzed. The available data shows a significant influence of secondary compression of soft Bangkok clay on subsidence computations. Suitable approximate relationships between pressure and C~, a and b were found for model application. A/b was found to lie in the range 0-5(10-4min-l) without any clear trend with pressure. For the developed model, values in the ranges of 1-2 m. and 0.2-0.4 months are satisfactory for depth and time increments respectively. A parametric study showed the significant influence of the Gibson & Lo parameters ~' b and K on the settlement - time computations. The modifications required to arrive at a 'realistic' model are presented in the thesis.
