AbstractIn many developing countries accident records are filed in pigeon holes either by geographical area (i.e. zones) or by the months of the year. Malaysia is no exception and accident records in Kuala Lumpur are filed in these pigeon holes by months of the year. When a location needs attention for improvement, there is the usual job of manually sorting these records which not only is time consuming but also labour consuming. The purpose of this study is to apply a system so that all the above problems of the pigeon hole system are eliminated. A location system and an accident classification system are used as the basis of this study. A computer program is used to list all accidents according to lacations and descending order of the "Road User Movement" code number. The other information which can be obtained from this listing are the date, day of the week, types of vehicles involved, the severity of accident, the road and light conditions, traffic controls, and the cost incurred against each accident. With the above outputs, analysis of the types of accidents which occurred most frequently both at intersections and mid-blocks was made. Also analyzed are the severity index, the types of intersections and midblock, and the distributions of accidents with respect to hour of the day, day of the week and the month of the year. With results obtained from the above analysis, suitable recommendations were made for further action.
