Abstract | Site investigation was carried out to assess the geotechnical condition at Hing Man Estate, Chai Wan, Hong Kong where the Housing Authority of Hong Kong plans to build a housing complex with three 42-storey towers. The study showed that the Hing Man Estate is underlain by acid volcanic rocks, mostly pyroclastic, of the Repulse Bay volcanics belonging to Middle Jurassic age with intrusive granites of Late Jurassic age. The rocks were weathered to different grades exhibiting a weathering profile and fragmented by at least three sets of joints. The bed rock is occasionally exposed. Generally they are covered by a variable thickness of soil of widely varying geotechnical character. Four important soil groups were differentiated, i.e. fill, slide deposits, colluvium and residual soil. Presence of large and small boulders is a common component of all soils. The position of groundwater was variable between 3.5 to 16 m below ground surface. Small to intermediate soil slides were observed and were a result of interference of slope by construction activity in the area. A major unstable zone was delineated above the proposed location of tower 3. Stability analysis was undertaken for slopes above the different blocks under varying condition of pore water pressure and strength parameters. Analysis of all data led to the conclusion that the slope above tower 3 is least favorable. To carry out construction of tower 3 in its present proposed location may involve significant slope stabilization work. Several recommendations have been made to improve the site. |
