Abstract40 farmers from 6 different villages in Comilla district, Bangladesh, were interviewed on crop year 1976-1977 during September, 1977 to December, 1977, to compare the yields, labor ~se and cropping intensity on rainfed and irrigated farm plots and also to determine the effect of tractor tillage on yields, labor use and cropping intensity on both rainfed and irrigated farm plots. The individual paddy plot was categorized as whether it was, i) rainfed only, ii) irrigated with swinging basket, or iii) irrigated with low-lift pump or shallow or deep tube well. It was found that yields were higher in irrigated fields than in the rainfed fields. The yields of pump irrigated fields were higher than that of the swinging basket irrigated fields . Labor utilization was higher for irrigated fields compared to rainfed fields; swinging basket irrigated fields utilized maximum labor of all. No farmer in the area had his own tractor for tillage. To the extent the tractor tillage in the area has been introduced it was seen that, tractor tilled fields had increased yields, the impact was reflected more in the adequately water supplied area with high yielding paddy varieties. Tractor tilled fields utilized less labor. Cropping intensity was more or less same for rainfed and irrigated fields. For both rainfed and irrigated fields the cropping intensity was slightly higher on tractor tilled fields compared to country plow tilled fields.
