AbstractEvidences and preliminary investigations revealed that Bangladesh as an alluvial deposits sedimentary rock is underlain by a vast body of water. As such it is felt to develop this resource to augment winter irrigation so as to increase the deficit agricultural output to feed the timing mouths. Present study area is hydrogeologically a typical part of riverine Bangladesh. The hydrogeological properties of the area were examined to fix the suitability of the aquifers for fully development. Geological setting and formation constants signified the worth of the aquifer for extensive development. Analysis of water table fluctuation inferred the static condition of water table depths in cyclic orders. Whatever depletion occurs in dry season is recoverable in wet season. A water balance study showed that annual recharge to the aquifers was excellent due to the prevailing less compacted top soil and heavy rainfall of wet season. Due to lack of intensive cultivation and limited extraction from aquifers, most of the recharged amount drains out of the formation as underflow. Recommendations were made for the improvement and development of the existing system of hydrogeological and climatological observations. Long pumping test with observation wells will facilitate the analysis of non equilibrium state of flow. Estimation of safe yield and review of possibilities of conjunctive use of surface and sub-surface water are mandatory prior to extensive ground water development of the area.
