Abstract | The Flood Forecasting Models for the Upper Chao Phraya and Pasak River Basins are developed using the SSARR (Streamflow Synthesis and Reservoir Regulation) Model. The model characteristics which are of the subbasin, channel, flood plain and of the balancing flow mechanism are established through model calibration against the daily flow data in the flooded year 1975. The rainfall and river gaging stations considered are those which can transmit their observed data to the Flood Forecasting Center e.g. by radio communications, etc. The accuracy of the model performance on flood forecasting are tested by applying them to perform flood forecasting operation 5 days in advance on day to day basis at the reporting river flow gaging stations in the year 1977. During the forecasting operation, the model characteristics are considered to be unchanged with time, the inputs are the observed daily rainfall which are presumably used as the forecasted inputs to the models. The flood forecast operation consists of a back up computation for the adjustment of flow conditions on the current time which are used further as the initial conditions for the forecast computation. The accuracy of the model performance depends mainly upon the flow conditions on the current day, the forecasted rainfall input, the experience of model users as well as the forecasting technique. The accuracy of the models are evaluated by means of the medians and the standard deviation of the forecast error distributions. The analysis of the model signified the acceptable performance of the model in performing flood forecasting operation 5 days in advance in the Upper Chao Phraya and Pasak River Basins. |
