AbstractThe investigation concerns the erosion of bed material around a pile structure due to the wave action. A vertical circular cylinder pile was installed in the two dimensional wave flume, where a horizontal bed of fine sand with diameter n50 = 0.45 mm was also set up. Experimentation was conducted under monochromatic waves of different characteristics, and' condition for incipient motion was observed for each of two kinds of pile and three different conditions of water depth. The magnitude and pattern of ultimate scour and the time required to reach this state was measured for each condition. These results were summarized in terms of the influential parameters including waves, water depth and pile characteristics on the basis of dimensional analysis. The computation based on the theoretical solution of interaction of plane waves with a circular cylinder in a two dimensional wave flume was also done to get the wave diffraction diagram and maximum velocity distribution around the pile structure. By comparing the experimental data and computed results, it is concluded the scour caused by waves is severe in shallow water and long wave condition, and also the larger pile may experience severe scour around it than the smaller diameter pile.
