AbstractA distorted physical model of the prototype Gulf area at Ao Phai estimated to be influenced by temperature rise due tot he release of cooling water from the proposed nuclear power plant of EGAT (Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand) was designed and constructed at the AIT Research Center floor. Steady state currents and tide levels for three different stages of the prototype ebb current were simulated in the model. The validity of the present arrangement of artificial roughness elements in the model was investigated. It was observed that the overall flow pattern in the model is quite satisfactory and similar to the prototype flow pattern. But the mean velocity in the model is somewhat higher than the corresponding mean velocity in the prototype. Roughness investigation result show that present arrangement of the model bed is smoother than required. This might be the cause of increased velocity in the model. The causes of variation of velocity magnitude and direction at localized areas of the model and prototype were dis cussed.
