AbstractThis paper will present the theoretical analysis and experimental data on the deformation of wind waves passing over a submerged breakwater. The problem will be theoretically treated on the assumption of small amplitude waves in two ways: (i) the breakwater is approximated by a thin barrier, (ii) the effect of the width of a breakwater is taken into consideration. The two methods of applying these theories to the irregular waves such as wind waves will also be proposed; namely, the significant wave method, or histogram method based on the statistical joint distribution and the wave spectrum method. The experimental results obtained in a laboratory wave flume for both regular waves and wind waves will be shown and discussed.
