AbstractThis study reviews the salt water intrusion of Bangkok which is threatening ground water supplies. Major emphasis is given to Nakhon Luang aquifer since it provides the major portion of ground water supplies to the area. Based on the limited available data annual isochlor maps are prepared for Nakhon Luang aquifer from year 1969-1977. The solute transport model which predicts the movement of chloride in flowing ground water is used to study the intrusion problem in the area, for Nakhon Luang aquifer. The model uses a finite difference equivalent of convective dispersion equation solved digitly. The analysis shows that salt water intrusion in Bangkok area is not being caused by sea water. Instead the connate water bodies located in the western side of t he Chao Phya River, extending north from Gulf of Thai land to Amphoe Bang Bua Thong is the source from which salt water movement occurs. In addition the vertical leakage from overlying aquifer is responsible for some additional intrusion.
