Abstract | This thesis presents the findings of field and laboratory investigations of the undrained shear strength of Soft Bangkok Clay at the proposed Naval Dockyard at Porn Prachul, which is located on t he west bank of the Chao Phraya River south of Bangkok. The object of this study was t o obtain, compare, and correlate, the results of different types of shear tests used to determine the shear strength of soft clay. To fulfill the purpose of this study the following type of shear strength tests were performed: (1) the Dutch cone penetration test, (2) the field vane test, (3) the unconsolidated undrained triaxial test, (4) the consolidated undrained triaxial test, with and without back pressure. The results were then used to predict the failure height of the proposed test embankment. Correlations between Dutch cone and vane shear tests were found by regression analysis and stability analysis. The cone factors from the Dutch cone tests for several different clays were correlated with their plasticity indexes. The value of cone factor can be predicted for a clay deposit, if its plasticity index is known, from the simple equation, PI =2.85 Nc + 2.5 An attempt was also made t o narrow down the range of cone factors of various clays by using the correction factors established by KOIRALA (1977) to correct the vane strengths. It was possible to greatly reduce the range of published cone factors for different soil s . The failure height of a proposed test embankment was also predicted. |
