AbstractIn this investigation of building-foundation interaction system, frequency-independent model of foundation-medium is developed. The governing equations are expressed in the first order differential equations which are sufficient to specify the motion of the system. The building is assumed to possess the classical normal modes so that the higher modes can be truncated to reduce the degree of freedom. Damped free vibration mode shapes are used to decouple the above equations into independent complex equations which are numerically solved employing linear acceleration-approach under a certain earthquake record. From the numerical examples considered, it is concluded that there exists a situation in which the interaction-effect is significant depending on the fundamental period of the superstructure and the shear wave velocity in the foundation-medium.
