AbstractThe properties of rice hull ash (RHA) were studied to consider the possible use of RHA as a pozzolanic material. Two experimental programs were conducted to determine: a) the physical properties of RHA as a pozzolanic material, and b) the influence of the RHA when used as a partial replacement for cement in past e and concrete mixes. The results indicate that RHA can be used as a pozzolanic material conforming to the requirements of a ASTM class N pozzolana. Strength results for paste, mortar and concrete mixes indicate that for cement replacement exceeding 20 percent, by weight, the low early age strength does not significantly increase at later ages. The volume change characteristics of all mixes containing RHA exceeded those of the control mix. However, for the concrete mixes for up to 20 percent cement replacement, the increases were not significant particularly if the influence of the water cement ratio is taken into account. The test results indicate that RHA can be used as a pozzolanic material particularly in developing countries where cement is expensive and where rice hulls are considered a waste material.
