AbstractThe mobility in the city is the key important for the residents to access the workplaces in urbanized megacity, especially Bangkok. Nowadays, the metro system plays the significant role of commuting residents to business area together with supplement transport modes such as taxis, buses, and vans. Therefore, the human mobility patterns of these modes are essential for public transport planning and development. For sustainable public transport, in addition, the metro station characterization, that reveals the insight characteristics, are very useful for future planning and development. The first objective of the study aims to design and develop a process to derive origins and destinations (ODs) from the public transport of metro system, taxis, and vans big data based on their travel characteristics. All OD locations of these three modes were aggregated into transportation analysis zones (TAZ) to extract the human mobility patterns. The second objective is to characterize metro stations by their attributes including metro ridership, metro and taxi connectivity, metro and van connectivity, daytime population, and POI diversity. The metro stations were categorized by using the multivariate clustering based on its attributes. The human mobility analysis result reveals the connectivity between the metro station and taxi trips and van trips. There were significantly high volume of taxi trips and van trips near-by certain metro stations. This implies the modal shift of the public transport mode. Some metro stations in low residential area have less passengers than expected which is the severe problem for the sustainable mass transit development. The catchment area of these metro stations should be further developed for the mix-use to gain a higher number of passengers. In addition, the relationship of metro system, taxi, and van were significant attributes for van-hub oriented and airport-oriented metro station types.
