Abstract | Prediction of extreme sea level is complex because many types of water level fluctuations can occur simultaneously. Since the predominant events, which are responsible for major sea level fluctuations, are mainly caused by meteorological changes, particularly the storm surge, an attempt has been made to study the data statistically with a view of extrapolating the trends of the observed frequencies so that a guide may be given as to the optimum height of sea defenses. However, the long range extrapolation of the historical data is no longer dependable, the results obtained using statistical techniques need to be checked for its consistency by computing the major deterministic components to the sea level fluctuations, such as surge and astronomical tide. Six different statistical distributions are firstly employed in this study and the extrapolated extreme high sea level is later on checked with the deterministic combination of surge and tide level obtained from theoretical considerations. Bathystropic storm theory is used in predicting the most probable maximum surge caused by the maximum intensity cyclone or Probable Maximum Cyclone. Harmonic analysis is used for the prediction of tide. It is seen that the extrapolated extreme sea level from the historical data is in agreement with that obtained by considering the effects due to surge and tide. |
