AbstractThis study investigates the transformative impact of virtual environments on the perceptions and behaviors of Thai users within the Metaverse, particularly focusing on gender dynamics. Employing qualitative methodologies, including in-depth interviews and observations, the research uncovers the interplay between virtual experiences and real-world gender perceptions. The study reveals the dual capacity of virtual environments to either reinforce or challenge traditional gender stereotypes and biases among Thai users. While offering opportunities for experimentation and subversion of societal norms, the perpetuation of gender biases through design choices remains prevalent. Inclusive representation within gaming platforms emerges as crucial for fostering acceptance and understanding of diverse gender identities, contributing to the cultivation of empathy and inclusivity. Virtual gender switching is a crucial mechanism through which Thai users explore diverse gender identities. In virtual world, the emphasis shifts away from physical attributes that signifies both masculinity and feminity, opening space for a more diverse range of expressions and identities. These environments provide safe havens for authentic self-expression and facilitate profound journeys of identity exploration beyond societal confines. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in virtual environments reshapes spaces and challenging existing gender norms. Addressing biases and ethical concerns inherent in AI algorithms is essential for harnessing AI’s transformative potential, thereby bridging gender gaps across various spheres and advancing societal goals of equality within virtual ecosystems. This study highlights the intricate dynamics of gender within virtual environments and underscores the need for concerted efforts towards fostering inclusivity and challenging stereotypes. Recommendations include advocating for inclusive design practices within the gaming industry, promoting diverse representations, and implementing ethical guidelines for AI integration. By prioritizing these recommendations, stakeholders can contribute to the creation of a more equitable and understanding digital landscape for Thai users within the Metaverse.
