Abstract | Peri-urbanization in developing countries is significantly driven by tourism, including Bali as the primary tourism destination in Indonesia. Tourism development proliferation and excessive urban expansion led to land use conversion, demographic transition, and livelihood uncertainty. As Indonesia’s major metropolises and vital Bali tourism centers, Denpasar City faced urban population growth and non-agricultural land, which expanded into the peri-urban zone and the resultant impact on livelihood dynamics. Hence, the aim of this study is to investigate the livelihoods dynamics in the peri-urban community of Denpasar City. This is a mixed-methods study utilizing sequential explanatory techniques. The assessment of spatial trends involved multi decade land use and population change data, while the livelihood changes and dynamics analysis utilized mixed methods. The study also utilized the SLA framework to present the peri-urban livelihood dynamic. The result reveals that land use in peri-urban zone is urbanising, with massive settlement expansion consuming agricultural land and water bodies. In addition, peri-urban population expanded, with a dominant productive age where female growth is significant. Moreover, peri-urban transformation significantly increased financial assets and non-farm livelihoods, leading to a rise in the outcome. Furthermore, the rural-urban transition encountered by peri-urban communities encompasses difficulties with adaptation, capital, and business promotion, alongside opportunities due to high resident demand, labor, and affordable housing but followed by socioeconomic challenges. The study defines a novel paradigm that examines the causes-and-effects relationship of peri-urban livelihood dynamics and provides a valuable case study that advances peri-urban development and livelihood management. The study emphasizes the need to integrate rural-urban and tourism planning to manage peri-urban tourism growth, including infrastructure development, service provision, managing visitor impact, and promoting responsible tourism practices. This integrated approach can lead to economic prosperity, environmental protection, and a vibrant landscape that attracts tourists while preserving peri-urban uniqueness. |
