Abstract | ESG Strategies for the Banking Industry in Vietnam: A Social Focus on Sustainable Scholarship Programs This thesis explores good practices in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies within the Vietnamese banking sector, emphasizing the social pillar through the implementation of long-term scholarship programs. It highlights the need for Vietnamese banks to align their social initiatives with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national priorities, particularly in education, which plays a crucial role in reducing inequalities, fostering social mobility, and strengthening Vietnam’s human capital development. Using a mixed-method approach, this study analyzes ESG disclosures from 12 Vietnamese banks over three years (2021–2023) alongside qualitative insights from expert interviews. Additionally, it benchmarks global best practices from CIMB and Maybank in Malaysia and Westpac in Australia, identifying key success factors and replicable models for scholarship programs. The findings are contextualized within Vietnam’s socio-economic landscape, ensuring that recommendations are tailored to the local banking sector’s capacity and strategic goals. The research underscores the long-term benefits of scholarship programs as a sustainable ESG strategy, demonstrating their ability to address educational inequalities, enhance financial inclusion, and contribute to Vietnam’s socio-economic development. By integrating these initiatives into their ESG frameworks, banks can strengthen stakeholder trust, attract ESG- driven investments, and position themselves as leaders in sustainable finance. This study provides a strategic roadmap for Vietnamese banks to implement transparent and impactful educational sponsorship programs, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable development and social responsibility while achieving measurable social and economic impact. |
