Abstract | Road traffic accidents have grown to be one of global concern. In Thailand, the primary reason behind fatal accidents was exceeding the speed limit, particularly among motorcyclists. In Bangkok, 89% of fatal accidents involved motorcyclists. Therefore, the group of motorcycle users in Bangkok is the most risk group and it is an urgent need to prevent them from road accidents. To protect road users from accidents, 2 types of motorcycle lanes are implemented to separate and protect motorcyclists in traffic, Exclusive Motorcycle Lane (EML) and Non- Exclusive Motorcycle Lane (NEML). According to Regulations of traffic officers, in Bangkok 39 intersection overpasses are motorcycle-prohibited. Several bikers argued that everyone should be able to utilize facilities equally. To prevent this issue, a possible solution could be the establishment of motorcycle lanes. For the new construction, EML can be done if there is enough right of way. However, on the existing facilities in Bangkok, there might be problems in the construction process and limited space or right of. As a result, NEML will be the sort of motorcycle lane used for intersection overpasses in Bangkok. In this research, the impact on intersection overpasses in Bangkok from implementing Non-Exclusive Motorcycle Lane (NEML) was studied across all 4 sites, each with 2 directions. These sites include Kaset Overpass, Ratchayothin Overpass, Prasert-Manukitch Overpass and Ladprao Overpass. By utilizing microsimulation modeling with VISSIM software. The results show that implementing NEML can effectively reduce potential conflicts, including rear-end and lane-change conflicts, particularly when motorcycles are not allowed to overtake within NEML. Additionally, NEML can control motorcycle speeds, indicating a trade-off that must be balanced with user safety on the road. Furthermore, this study has developed guidelines for Non-Exclusive Motorcycle Lane for intersection overpasses in Bangkok. |
