Abstract | In the design and planning of irrigation systems the efficiencies of water utilization in application, conveyance and distribution systems are essential, particularly for calculating irrigation water requirement. Based on literature survey, the concept, formulas and procedure for estimating the efficiency or losses of various stages in application and conveyance of irrigation system have been presented, Methods in estimating various efficiencies of irrigation schemes were based mainly on the results of investigations carried out by ICID/ILRI. Results of the- selected estimated efficiency in water application show that an average value of 70 percent may be achieved for sprinkler irrigation, 60 percent for surface irrigation (basin, border and furrows) and of 40 to 50 percent for continuous basin under rice cultivation, These would be substantial saving in water requirement and further stresses the need for improved of irrigation management practices. It was observed that water losses due to the complexity of the project management in conveyance and distribution systems far exceed losses due to seepage and evaporation from the canal. In addition, recommending that canals or ditches be lined, is the generally accepted method of fighting seepage losses. Finally a number of other guidelines have been concluded and several technical measures for increasing and improvement of water utilization efficiency in irrigation project as well as preventing and reducing wastage of irrigation water were discussed and presented. |
