AbstractStochastic dynamic programming is used to derive the optimum operating policy that maximizes the expected net benefits for the Angat Multipurpose Reservoir in the Philippines. This reservoir serves the purposes of power generation, irrigation, water supply and flood control. Using the explicit form of stochastic dynamic programming, two cases were considered in the optimization of theĀ· Angat releases. These are: (1) optimization of irrigation and power releases with both purposes under equal priority; and (2) optimization of power releases subject to mandatory irrigation releases are not optimized but rather kept as constraints. The release policies derived thereof were tested for feasibility within a simulation environment of the reservoir system. The entire policy optimization - feasibility simulation scheme was done under the following operational assumptions: (a) the soundness of the NFC power demand and the Angat irrigation schedule; and (b) the representativeness of the service area rainfall and the reservoir inflows. Significant departures from these values will yield different results.
