AbstractThis study explores how competency development can effect on the performance of SME contractor companies in Myanmar. In this study, three critical components of competency development (technical competency, management competency and regulatory competency) are used as independent variables and company performance (cash flow, revenue growth, profit margin, customer satisfaction rate and work efficiency) as dependent variables. The researcher proposed visionary leadership and organization structure as moderating variables. Furthermore, factors which can influence competency development of SME contractors are also investigated and discussed. In this research, the data was obtained from 100 respondents, owners, managing directors and chief executive officers of SME contractors in Myanmar construction industry. The results clearly indicated that competency development has a high impact on company performance of SME contractors in Myanmar. Regulatory competency is the most important factor and technical competency is followed as the second crucial one. Visionary leadership was found as a moderating variable which can influence on the relationship between competency development and company performance. There are also key factors influencing the competency development, which the contractors should pay attention. The results of this study should provide evidence for SME contractors in Myanmar to develop their competencies to enhance company performance and to survive in this competitive 21st century market.
