AbstractA proposal for a study of scale model of the Chao Phraya river was prepared by the Division of Water Resources Engineering, Asian Institute of Technology, for the Bureau Centrald ' Etudes pour les Equipment d 'Outremer, France, as part of Phase III of the Study of Inland Waterways in Thailand. According to this proposal a test reach of the Chao Phraya River called "Bang Ma Fo" (being about 3,500 m long and 300 'V 400 m wide) located about 10 km downstream of Nakhon Sawan was selected. The model with a length scale of 60 and a depth scale of 20 (y = 3) was constructed at the Research Centre of AIT. This study deals with the hydraulic behaviour of the test reach of the Chao Phraya River and its changes when navigation improvement schemes are implemented. Various combinations of bottom panel s and groynes were investigated. Although the elevation of these structures was only just above the characteristic low flow conditions the effect of the structures was also observed during the medium and high flow conditions. For a complete description of the model study reference should also be made to AIT Research Report No.107. The present thesis mainly refers to the initial stages of the project, particularly the construction and calibration of the model, together with the field-investigations which were carried out with the help of the Royal Irrigation Department, Thailand, with the objective to estimate the bed-material transport rate of the Chao Phraya River.
