AbstractThe objective of this study is to study the applicability of the ferrocement folded plate roof panel in the construction of low cost roofs and conduct a comparative study with similar asbestos cement car port tile roof panels. The panel is analyzed by using the classical folded plate technique. Six ferrocement panels were fabricated with two varying parameters viz., type of wire mesh and the amount of reinforcement in transverse direction. The panels were subjected to uniformly distributed load by using sand and deflections were measured along the span length. Test results revealed that the panels using square mesh were stronger than those using hexagonal mesh. The transverse reinforcement had only little effect on the strength of the roof panels. Ferrocement panels were found to be much stronger than asbestos car port tiles with respect to their deflections. The economical evaluation showed that the cost per square meter of roofing area of the asbestos panels were higher than that of the ferrocement panels. It was concluded that the ferrocement folded plate panels ·offer a feasible solution to meet the needs of a strong and durable low-cost roofing in developing countries.
