AbstractThis study is concerned with the pattern, determinants and impact of paddy farm fragmentation in the Galle district of Sri Lanka. To present the pattern of paddy farm fragmentation simple descriptive statistics were used while the factor analysis was employed to identify the underlying dimensions associated with the paddy farm fragmentation. The stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine which among the 27 independent variables have strongest influence in predicting the extent of fragmentation. The impact of paddy farm fragmentation on farm efficiency and paddy productivity was tested by chi-square tests. In explaining the underlying dimensions of paddy farm fragmentation, twelve discernible factors were identified, out of which eight dimensions were found to be common to all the four parcel categories. Of the 27 variables tested, nine independent variables were entered as significant in predicting the extent of fragmentation in all the four parcel categories. On the whole these variables indicated the importance of economic, historical and social factors in explaining the extent of fragmentation. The impact of fragmentation of paddy farms on paddy productivity, irrigation and cultural practices were found to be significant, while the impact on general farm practices and neglect of parcels were not significant at the tested level. On the basis of these findings it is suggested that some remedial measures be made to consolidate the fragmented holdings in the Galle district.
