AbstractThe study dealt with the determination of the merging characteristics of traffic entering from an entrance ramp, and evaluation of the experiment on the effect of the funneling of the two lanes of the ramp into single lane entry. A photographic technique, in combination with 20-pen graphic recorder, was used to collect the field data. It was found that 3.1 sec and 3.4 sec were the critical gaps for the inside and outside lanes of the two-lane on-ramp, respectively. The funneling of the existing two-lanes of the ramp into a single-lane entry greatly reduced the percentage of ramp vehicles crossing over into the median lane of two-lane expressway and apparently resulted in smoother merging performance. It is hoped that .these findings may be of interest in the design of entrance ramps of interchanges in Thailand.
