AbstractAn investigation of vehicle operation on an 8 percent uphill gradient was conducted to evaluate the performance of vehicles. The evaluation was specifically concerned with the speeds of various types of vehicles as related to the distance travelled up the gradient. Parameters studied were the approach speed, the reduction of speed with distance, and the lateral shift of vehicles to the crawler lane. It was found that both light and heavy vehicles displayed reductions in speed as they travelled up the gradient. Heavy vehicles reached their sustained speed after forward travel of about 370 metres up the 8 percent gradient. About 60 percent of the heavy vehicles were found to shift onto the crawler lane. More than 80 percent of heavy vehicles which made this shift did so in the lower half of the length of the test section.
