AbstractThis study has approached the ground transport problem for Bangkok International Airport (B.I.A.) by interviewing t he airport users in the airport terminal for interpreting their travel behaviour and establishing quantitative measurements to evaluate the accessibility situations with the data observed. I The main findings are that of the non-employee travelers to the airport, 73.4 percent originated, and 76.5 percent terminated, in central Bangkok city. Only 34.1 percent of the airport employees originated or terminated in central Bangkok. Non-employees utilized private cars as the dominant mode because of speed and comfort. Airport employees largely used the public bus service, giving lower cost and reliability as the main reasons for doing so. Finally, relationships between the three ratios (average money cost, average travel time, and variance of travel times) for trips by private car and public bus, for trips to and from the airport were studied by regression analysis. In other studies, these variables have proved significant in predicting modal choice, especially for regular trips in urban areas. However, in the case of travel to the airport, these variables were found not to be significant, indicating that the decisions of all airport users as to choice of mode are not based on the same criteria of choice as more regular intra-urban journeys. The possible reasons for this are given. All the results give a clear picture for future improvement of ground access to the airport as an important part of comprehensive transportation planning in the Greater Bangkok Area.
