AbstractThere were 3 purposes of this research: (1) to get into the geology of dam foundation and its departures from anticipated conditions (2) to study the design criteria, the construction methods of a watertight cut-off and their modifications in complying with the actual geological conditions (3) to examine the efficiency and performance of the watertight cut-off. This study indicated that the departures from anticipated geological conditions were independent of to what extent the pre-construction investigations were carried out. It seems that the concept of 'palanced design' was acceptable for a dam of relatively poor geological conditions provided that those departures found during construction were thoroughly examined and a prompt modification of the treatment method was properly applied.
