AbstractThis thesis presents the design and construction of the double lever arm consolidation machine for applying pressures on the soil specimens,. 5 cm in diameter and 2 cm high, up to about 1000 kg/cm2 The double consolidometer was used to investigate the consolidation characteristics of two specimens at one time. Filters made of sintered bronze were used instead of porous stone to withstand the high pressures. Since the filters were rather compressible, corrections should be made to achieve this purpose. In order to keep the pressures applied to specimens, a jack was provided beneath the oedometer and was used frequently to maintain the lever-arms horizontal during t he test.
