AbstractAn analysis is made to determine the possibilities of using the 'Least Square Method' to obtain the parameters for predicting the time settlement relationship of embankments by using the observed settlement data of test embankments where the foundation soil is similar to that of the main embankment. A study is also made of some of the existing theories that have been developed to predict settlements. Five case histories were analyzed for predicting the ultimate consolidation settlement and the time-settlement relationship by using the observed settlement data and the methods discussed in this research. In some of the case studies the empirical method proposed gave . very good prediction of the ultimate consolidation settlement while the oedometer test results of certain case studies overestimated this settlement. The 'Least Squares Method' could be successfully applied to determine the field cv value for the 1 layer - 1 variable case. The cv value determined for this case was found to be 2-200 times as large as the laboratory values. Also the value obtained for cv by the 'Least Square Method' was found to depend on the value chosen for the drainage path. H. By increasing the number of layers it was possible to obtain accurate predictions of the observed time-settlement relationship, but due to a shortcoming in the method large number of parameters could not be incorporated in the computations.
