AbstractA survey on the current practice of soil sampling in the Philippines and in Thailand was carried out through interviews, questionnaire and site visits. In the Philippines seven commercial firms were visited while in Thailand the information was gathered from six organizations all of them involved in soil sampling and testing on a nationwide scale. It was found that in both countries the state-of-the-art in sampling was not very advanced and in general little interest existed in changing the situation. For the kind of laboratory tests carried out, however, the quality of the samples recovered appears for most applications to be reasonably adequate. Soft t o medium cohesive soils are commonly sampled by open drive (thin-walled .Shelby tube) samplers, while in stiff clays, sands and residual soils the split spoon sampler in combination with the Standard Penetration test is the most widely used sampling method. Boring and drilling equipment in both countries is usually of high standard and permits efficient operation.
