Abstract | Study reported herein was conducted to study the sources and characteristics of the palm oil mill wastewater, and to evaluate feasible and appropriate treatment alternatives for this wastewater. Via the manufacturing process, the principal sources of wastewater identified were sterilizer condensate and clarification sludge. The characteristics of the waste indicated its detrimental effects, if discharged without treatment, would cause environmental deterioration. Biological Treatments were attempted for the following alternatives. (A) Anaerobic Lagoon + Anaerobic Lagoon + Biodrum. (B) Anaerobic Lagoon + ·Anaerobic Lagoon+ Activated Sludge. The results obtained were encouraging wherein all attempted alternatives showed good treability efficiencies. Alternative A, with its better performance in term of various parameters, proved to be a better alternative. The choice, however, would depend on an economical comparison of the two alternatives and confirmation to the requirement of Malaysian Environmental Acts, 1974. |
