Abstract | The objective of this research was to study the land treatability and disposal of pineapple cannery as well as cane sugar processing wastewaters on Kamphaen Saen silty clay loam and Sattahip sandy loam soil types of Thailand, classified respectively (by USDA Classification) as Udic Hapluslalfs and Quartzipsamments. Slow Rate (SR) and Rapid Infiltration (RI) systems were experimented on soil columns with paragrass (Brachiariamutica) vegetation as well as without vegetation, at various hydraulic loadings of S, 10 and 15 cm/wk in all the cases, except 15, 30 and 45 cm/wk in case of cane sugar processing waste on Sattahip soil type. The results showed that there is no significant difference between the COD removal efficiencies of soil columns with vegetation and without vegetation. COD removals of more than 95 per cent were obtained with both the soil types in case of pineapple cannery wastewater and, 91 to 96 per cent COD removal was obtained in case of cane sugar processing wastewater, with the only exception of 45 cm/wk loading. Nitrogen removal due to the soil vegetation complex varied between SO to 80 per cent on Kamphaen Saen soil and 40 to 60 per cent on Sattahip soil types, and higher net removal was observed at higher loadings, probably due to denitrification. Phosphorus removals of 87 to 93 per cent on Kamphaen Saen soil and 60 to 74 per cent on Sattahip soil types were reported. A 93 to 96 per cent suspended solids removal was obtained irrespective of type of soil, wastewater and hydraulic loading employed, thus showing the treatability and disposal of agro-industrial wastes by land application. |
