Abstract | During the field operation of tractors, a significant portion of the energy is lost in slippage of traction wheels. In the existing control systems based on load on tractor, like draft and drive line torque control the operator has to manually control the implement depending on varying soil conditions that cause slippage. In this research, the slippage of traction wheels was used to control the implement in order to improve the utilization of engine power. The slippage of rear traction wheels with respect to the front wheels was found using photo-transistors and electronic circuits. An analog output of the slip activates a 12 volt DC motor whenever the slip deviates from the desired (set) level. The motor, through a gear train, rotates the draft control shaft of the tractor hydraulics. The implement is lifted whenever the slip increases beyond the Desiree level, and lowered when the slip decreases. Field trials showed that any desired level of slippage during operation could be maintained and the control of the implement was automatic. Experiments on tractor hydraulic response with the slip control system showed that the response of the new system is slowed down by the high torque requirement to move the draft control shaft. The rate of lifting or lowering depends on engine speed and damping which makes the control difficult. This creates a need for developing a new hydraulic system with fast response and less power to operate the control valve. The combination of the slip control system with the existing draft control system was found to be versatile and directly adaptable. The draw backs and limitations of the draft control system is compromised by the slip control system and thus the draft as well the slip could be maintained. |
