AbstractLean Six Sigma (LSS) is a widely adopted process improvement methodology with established characteristics applied across projects. The success of LSS projects is critical for achieving sustainable improvements within organizations. Consequently, understanding the factors that contribute to LSS project success is crucial. This study investigates the critical factors influencing LSS project success in the Vietnamese manufacturing industry, with a specific focus on foreign direct investment (FDI) companies. We analyzed the data based on responses from 295 LSS project leaders working in FDI manufacturing organizations located in Vietnam. Data analysis utilizes statistical software, including SPSS, AMOS, and Andrew Hayes' PROCESS macro. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is used to analyze the relationships between factors of team-level (team composition, competence, communication, goal setting) and individual-level (project leader's renqing, project leader's fear of failure) and LSS project performance. Furthermore, the study explores the moderating effects of top management commitment and project leader experience on the above relationships. The study reveals a statistically significant positive impact of project team composition, team goal setting, and the project leader’s renqing on LSS project performance. Additionally, the findings confirm the moderating effects of top management commitment and project leader experience within the model. However, the analysis did not identify statistically significant relationships between team competence, team communication, and the project leader's fear of failure on LSS project performance. These findings offer valuable insights for optimizing LSS implementation in the context of Vietnam's FDI manufacturing. Building project teams with diverse skills and experiences facilitates more creative problem-solving approaches. Encouraging teams to set ambitious yet achievable goals collaboratively can enhance team motivation and project focus. By implementing strategies that demonstrate top management commitment to LSS initiatives, developing a talent pool of experienced LSS leaders, and selecting leaders with renqing skills, companies can empower their LSS teams and achieve optimal project outcomes.
