AbstractThe spectrum defines the distribution of energy with frequency and is useful for engineeri.ng design purposes. Frequency spectral function is obtained through the computations of Fourier transform of autocorrelation function. The autocorrelation function is a formulated representation of a random fluctuation process by the application of statistical theory. Six types of autocorrelation functions and the corresponding spectral functions are mathematically and graphically investigated in this study. After having analyzed and compared their characteristics, it is concluded that: (1) Spectrum of fluid flow (air and water) fits to type III with F - f-2 ; (2) Spectrum of unsteady flow due to tidal current fits to type V with F - f - 2 ; and (3) Spectrum of water surface fluctuation due to wave motion or spectrum of streamflow with peak values fits to types V and VI.
