AbstractThe main features of this study are the water balance study of Jaffna peninsula basin and ground water modelling. The water balance study is carried out for an eight years period and the results are presented here. The study throws light on three ground water models for lens aquifers. The model I is simple and can be applied to areas where Ghyben-Herzberg principle holds true. The model II is specifically developed to suit the conditions in the Jaffna basin where the free surface of lens aquifer lies below mean sea level during some period at some places. Much attention is paid in the development and verification of model II. The model III is of a more general form and more complicated. Avenues for research are left open in the case of model III.
