AbstractThis investigation is concerned with the analysis of an elastic cylindrical bar partially embedded in a two-layer elastic half-space. The bar is applied by a torque at the top end. Hankel transform is applied to the functions of the radial coordinate; the origin of which is at the center of the bar. Stress singularity in the vicinity of the perimeter of the bar's lower end is al so incorporated. Generalized stress singularity factors are obtained to suit various parameters involved. The problem is decomposed into two parts; namely, an extended elastic half-space in the absence of the bar and fictitious bar represented by a shear modulus equal to the difference between the moduli of the real bar and the medium. The problem is formulated under the approximation that the angle of twist of the real bar is equal to that of the fictitious bar. The governing equation is found to be a Fred holm integral equation of the second kind and solved by an approximate numerical method. Comparison with a more rigorous existing solution for short bars is made. A few numerical solutions have been obtained for various practical values of parameters involved and presented in tables for the purposes of analysis of such structures.
