AbstractBased on a classical optimization technique called Lagrange multiplier method, a numerical study is conducted to obtained the optimum cost of singly reinforced concrete beams using different combinations of materials strengths. The study divided into two parts, the first part deals with the determination of the optimum cost of beam without considering the cost of form-work and the other including the cost of form-work. The former case is particularly useful in precast construction where the repetitive use of formwork makes its cost negligible. The expression of ultimate moment which is used as the main constraint condition is derived based on the ultimate strength design provided by ACI 318- 77. Numerical analyses show that the total cost of beam per unit length can be reduced by as much as 17 to 25% if suitable combination of materials strength is adopted in the construction, Finally design charts based on optimum steel ratio for different combinations of material strengths are prepared and presented for practical design use.
