AbstractThis study is concerned with the Farmers' Associations in Thailand. An attempt is made to investigate the following aspects: socio-economic status of FA members, FA regulations, the role and influence of government officials with regards to FA in the area, the factors that affect the effectiveness of management and greater involvement, and alternative organizational framework for FA, Further, guidelines for planning to evolve a better and more effective self-help organization are recommended, Field research for the study was conducted in two Farmers' Associations in tambon Pak Chong and tambon Moo Si in Pak Chong district, Nakonrajasima province. Primary data were collected from the sampled respondents using a questionnaire. Free interviews, observation, unstructured talk were the techniques employed in the collection of data. Records from government offices were additional sources of secondary data apart from published materials, The research revealed that ineffective administration and management, lack of activities and members participation are some of the causes for a FA to be unsuccessful, FA is formulated by the government and farmers have the concept that organizing FA is to get credit at low interest. They do not think that FA belongs to them, but it is viewed as a government unit to support them1 It is suggested that self-help organization should be organized by the farmers themselves not by the government, The initiative to form an association must emanate from the farmers so that they can have a sense of total involvement and greater participation by the members will be enhanced,
