AbstractThe main objective of the research was to measure the reliability of public bus services in Lahore. Relationships between reliability and factors affecting reliability were analyzed. Variations in observed journey speeds, headways and waiting times were used as indicators of the reliability of the bus service. The results of the analysis showed a very variable and confused situation. However, it was possible to draw a few conclusions, which are as follows: Appreciable variations in journey speeds of buses were observed, but no satisfactory explanation was found for these variations. Significant variations in waiting time, and extreme variations in bus headways were observed. It was found that the main cause of headway variation was undisciplined departure times of the buses from the terminals, rather than route conditions such as traffic congestion. Since observed mean headways were always greater than sahe8uled headways and since bus journey speeds varied unpredictably, there is a clear need to revise the schedule of buses in Lahore to take account of these factors.
