AbstractThe study covers the recognition, delineation, and assessment of the present stability conditions of the potential failure slopes in the Carmen pit of Atlas Consolidated-Mining and Development Corporation (ACMDC), Cebu, "Philippines. It also covers the back-evaluation of the landslides which .occurred in the area. Six potentially unstable wedges in the metamorphic rocks (metavolcanics with intercalated metasediments) are identified in the lower benches at the hanging wall side of the pit. Five wedges are confined in the slightly weathered zone of the area and one major .:wedge is .expressed in the moderately weathered zone. The area exhibits three adjacent landslides which are localized in the highly argillized area of the pit. The Northeast and Hanging Wall slides occurred mainly in the highly to completely weathered and highly fractured metamorphic rocks. The Carmen Flow, which is in between the other two slides, ·occurred in part in the Masaba Formation composed mainly of shales, sandstone, conglomerate, with intercalated patchy coal seams and in part in the highly completely weathered and highly fractured metamorphic rocks. Two methods of analysis are employed. One method is applied to rock slopes and the other is applied to soil slopes. For both cases, the assessment is only limited to determine the .factor of safety of the slope and the maximum slope height and slope angles which can cause the slope failure ·and to determine the minimum phreatic level which brought ·the present landslides to occur.
