AbstractThe Engineering properties and the petrography of the three Ranges of Weathering grades recognized in Hong Kong granite from Leighton Hill in Hong Kong Island were studied in detail. Attempts were made to correlate both the petrography and the engineering properties of this rock type with its degree of Weathering. The effects of the grain size, fracture opening, fracture intensity and cloudiness of feldspars on the engineering properties were also analyzed. Interrelationships were observed for all the test results. It is concluded that the engineering properties and the petrographic parameters namely, the Gloudiness of feldspars, fracture opening and fracture intensity are reliable to use in the classification of the three ranges of weathering grades. Moreover, it is recognized that the effects of grain size and the cloudiness of Feldspars on the engineering properties are more prominent than the other two parameters' for the rocks of weathering grade I to II whereas the effect of fracture opening, fracture intensity and cloudiness of feldspars found to be more cri.tic.al for the rocks of higher weathering grades.
